Schweitzer Fellows Janel Martir and Leslie Wenning recently marked a major milestone in their collaboration with the Burlington, VT-based Northern Lights. They successfully organized an art show for women participating in their art therapy program. Northern Lights is a support house for women transitioning from incarceration back into Chittenden County. The goal of the art program is to create a supportive social environment in which the women feel safe expressing themselves through art activities, to promote healthy coping strategies through art, and to encourage self-reflection through the art-making process.
The show was part of the 2013 Art Hop in Burlington, organized by SEABA, the South End Arts + Business Association. Titled MEMTAMORPHOSIS: Northern Lights’ Group Art Exhibition, the show offered an opportunity for the public display of eight of the participants’ art. Two pieces were sold and proceeds will directly benefit Northern Lights.
The University of Vermont College of Medicine, where both Schweitzer Fellows are second-year medical students, featured their project in a recent newsletter. Photos from their work with the art therapy group are available here, and more information about the project is available on the Metamorphisis blog.
