July 11, 2012 - Chicago Schweitzer Program Hosts July 24 Lecture with Community Leader Torrey L. Barrett
On Tuesday, July 24, the Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellows Program will host a lecture by Pastor Torrey L. Barrett, I, the Founder and Executive Director of the K.L.E.O. (Keep Loving Each Other) Community Family Life Center in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. (Click here to download a flyer with full event details.) Barrett
has long been passionate about working to empower vulnerable youth.
After graduating from Louisiana State University, he worked with
Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) participants through
several social service agencies, and had a gift for inspiring the most
difficult clients. But Barrett’s work took on a new and deeply
personal urgency when tragedy struck his family. In March of 2007, his
younger sister, Kleo Y. Barrett, was killed in a domestic violence
incident. Barrett and his family immediately sprung into action,
creating two not-for-profit entities that work to eradicate domestic
violence and build character and self- esteem among troubled youth in
their community. Barrett’s K.L.E.O. Community Family Life Center brings
about change in the lives of its participants by fostering an atmosphere
of unity and teaching them to Keep Loving Each Other. Barrett’s
earlier efforts also received acclaim. In 2004, he was appointed US
Chapter President of Youth Federation for World Peace (YFWP). In that
capacity, Barrett facilitated bringing large groups of youth from
America overseas to engage youth in other countries in peaceful
negotiations. He also partnered with Martin Luther King, III and the
Realizing the Dream organization to work with citizens of Nairobi, Kenya
in the wake of post-election violence. Barrett’s work in the Middle
East earned him an Ambassador for Peace title by the state of Israel. EVENT DETAILS: UIC School of Public Health- 1st Floor Auditorium 1603 W.
