*** Read a press release announcing the selection of the 2013-14 New Hampshire-Vermont Schweitzer Fellows here.***
ABOUT US
Founded in 1996 under the direction of Dr. Joseph O’Donnell, the New Hampshire-Vermont (NH-VT) Schweitzer Fellows Program is one of thirteen Schweitzer program sites across the U.S. dedicated to developing a pipeline of emerging professionals who enter the workforce with the skills and commitment necessary to address unmet health needs.
Since the program’s inception, Schweitzer Fellows across New Hampshire and Vermont—competitively chosen from health-focused graduate student applicants in a variety of fields—have worked tirelessly to address health disparities and the social determinants of health throughout the region. OUR IMPACT
Since 1996, more than 300 Schweitzer Fellows have provided over 62,000 hours of service to New Hampshire and Vermont’s most vulnerable communities. Partnering with area community-based organizations, these Fellows have addressed a wide variety of unmet health needs by creating and carrying out yearlong projects with direct service at their core. Examples include the following initiatives:
• Have Justice-Will Travel and innovative mobile legal assistance program for low-income rural women and children in Vermont • Smile-Docs, which has brought UVM medical students in Burlington, VT-area schools to teach science and health for 15 years • A mobile health clinic serving migrant workers on Vermont’s dairy farms • Bedside Brainiacs, a tutoring program designed to minimize the education gap caused by childhood hospitalization •A case-management diabetes program for high-risk patients who face socioeconomic barriers to regular checkups and counseling •Teen Court, an alternative to the criminal justice system for first-time juvenile offenders in Merrimack County, NH
Please see Fellows and Projects for a complete listing of Fellows’ service projects, which are made possible by our generous sponsors. When Fellows’ initial year of service ends, they carry their commitment to meeting the health needs of underserved people forward as members of the Schweitzer Fellows for Life alumni network, now more than 2,000 strong.

OUR FELLOWS SPEAK
“Being a part of a Fellowship that honors the lifetime of service of a great man gives me humility, gratitude and another great role model. As we strive to find competency and purpose in a field where it seems easy to be drawn into a cynical negativity, we must retain the integrity and intention we had when we began medical school. Albert Schweitzer was a man who succeeded in retaining and acting on these values, and it was a privilege to learn more about his life, and to be a part of a Fellowship in his honor.” –Schweitzer Fellow Megan Malgeri, NH-VT
“I thought that a legal education would make me more of a pragmatist and less idealistic. The opposite has happened. I leave the Schweitzer Fellowship with even stronger feelings that major progress is achievable”. –Schweitzer Fellow Kirby Keaton, NH-VT
