*** Read a press release announcing the selection of the 2012-13 Houston-Galveston Schweitzer Fellows here.***
ABOUT US
Launched in 2008, the Houston-Galveston Schweitzer Fellows Program was initiated by Healthcare for the Homeless—Houston and is a collaboration of area academic institutions and non-profit service agencies. Hosted at Baylor College of Medicine, it is one of thirteen Schweitzer program sites across the U.S. dedicated to developing a pipeline of emerging professionals who enter
the workforce with the skills and commitment necessary to address unmet
health needs.
Since the program’s inception, Schweitzer Fellows in the greater Houston and Galveston area—competitively chosen from health-focused graduate student applicants in a variety of fields—have worked tirelessly to address health disparities and the social determinants of health throughout the greater region.

OUR IMPACT
Since 2008, over 30 Schweitzer Fellows have provided over 2,000 hours of service to Houston and Galveston’s most vulnerable communities. Partnering with area community-based organizations, these Fellows have addressed a wide variety of unmet health needs by creating and carrying out yearlong projects with direct service at their core. Examples include the following initiatives:
• Implementing a program for the local Burmese and Bhutanese refugee community that helps teach parents and their children to navigate the local health care system including the process of obtaining immunizations in preparation for entry into public school • Reviving the Harris County Hospital District’s BOOKS program and Reach out and Read, two hospital-based early childhood literacy outreach programs • Reaching out to artists experiencing homelessness to collect pieces of their work, which will be displayed at a clinic that serve the homeless as a tribute an a way to honor their clients and the homeless community
Please see Fellows and Projects for a complete listing of Fellows’ service projects, which are made possible by our generous sponsors. When Fellows’ initial year of service ends, they carry their commitment to meeting the health needs of underserved people forward as members of the Schweitzer Fellows for Life alumni network, now more than 2,000 strong.

I can’t say that I did everything right, and I can’t say that everything went as planned, but when my students were eager to see me, when they laughed and had fun playing, and when they took what they learned in my class and applied it to their lives, I realized that I was actually making a difference, and it made the struggles worth it.” – Schweitzer Fellow Amber Higgs, Houston-Galveston “One of the most meaningful things this experience has taught me is the importance of persistence. As a fresh new Schweitzer scholar, I had plenty of ideas that looked fantastic on paper. However, as we started to meet resistance in making the initial contact with organizations, we realized that transitioning our ideas into action required a collaborative effort”. – Schweitzer Fellow Iroguel Igbinosa, Houston-Galveston CONTACT USJennifer Cook, Program DirectorHouston Schweitzer Fellows Program Baylor College of Medicine 3701 Kirby Drive, Ste. 600 Houston, Texas 77098 T: 713-798-1045 F: 713-798-7940 E: jc23@bcm.edu
