BAY AREA SCHWEITZER FELLOWS PROGRAM

ABOUT US
Founded in 2006, the Bay Area Fellows Program is one of eleven Schweitzer program sites across the U.S.
Since the program’s inception, Schweitzer Fellows in the Bay Area—competitively chosen from health-focused graduate student applicants in a variety of fields—have worked tirelessly to address health disparities and the social determinants of health throughout the region.

OUR IMPACT
Since 2006, 40 Schweitzer Fellows have provided over 8,000 hours of service to the Bay Area’s most vulnerable communities. Partnering with area community-based organizations, these Fellows have addressed a wide variety of unmet health needs by creating and carrying out yearlong projects with direct service at their core. Examples include the following initiatives:
• Piloting a Passport to Wellness program that creates a role for pharmacists as preventive health care providers • Implementing a skin cancer screening and referral program for Latino day laborers • Starting a women’s mental health support group at a San Francisco homeless shelter • Actualizing a concept program that aims to raise scientific competency among low income students who have traditionally underperformed in the natural sciences • Setting up a Hepatitis B Free Clinic to provide free testing, vaccination, treatment and education for low income, uninsured Asians and Pacific Islanders • Developing a bilingual oral health education curriculum for the San Francisco Homeless Prenatal Program and the San Mateo Medical Center Dental Clinic • Creating a community garden at a low-income High School
Please see Fellows and Projects for a complete listing of Fellows’ service projects which are supported by our generous sponsors. When Fellows’ initial year of service ends, they carry their commitment to meeting the health needs of underserved people forward as members of the Schweitzer Fellows for Life alumni network, now more than 2,000 strong.

OUR FELLOWS SPEAK
“The primary objective of my project is, by eliminating the language barrier, to effectively increase oral health awareness within the Chinese community and help to prevent childhood caries [cavities] starting from pregnancy.” -Schweitzer Fellow Alice Hsieh, Bay Area
“An added value that I provided the youth at City Crossroads was planting the seed that their potential in life is far more vast than they previously imagined for themselves… I believe that in order to increase the number of underrepresented, underserved youth in higher education, we need to serve as mentors and reveal this foreign world that can be perceived as unattainable otherwise.” -Schweitzer Fellow Charlene Rocha, Bay Area
