Craig Blatt, Vogtle Ninh, Richard Sawaya, Biraj Shah, University of Maryland, Baltimore Dental School Craig, Vogtle, Richard and Biraj will be working on Healthy Smiles for Baltimore Kids - Phase III - to incorporate educational lessons for the afterschool students.
Karolyn Kopcza, Danielle Kyes, and Lisa Selem, University of Maryland, Baltimore Dental School Karolyn, Danielle and Lisa will be working with Success in Style (My Sisters Place) on a project promoting dignity and self-sufficiency among disadvantaged women.
Alison Hoover, Rebekah Husker, and Ellen Paulisick, University of Maryland, Baltimore Dental School Alison, Rebekah and Ellen will work with Baltimore Education and Awareness for mothers and children (B.E.A.M.) program to provide oral health screenings for women and their children.
Farashta Sediqzad and Diana Shoe, University of Maryland, Baltimore Dental School Farashta and Diana will work on an oral health project geared toward Hispanic moms and toddlers.
Leila Ashkeboussi and Kathleen O'Malley, University of Maryland, Baltimore Law School Leila and Kathleen will work with Civic Environmental Leadership Program to heighten environmental awareness amongst at-risk youth in Baltimore.
Jordan Ambrose and Jessica Ton, University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine Jordan and Jessica will work on a project about sex trafficking & hygiene education for adolescents, which aims to help them develop healthy lifestyles and be able to re-enter society with a better outlook for their future.

Andrew York, University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Pharmacy Andrew will work on a project that aims to target diseases that are prevalent and preventable, and to educate students on how to prevent the disease.

Dorie Frank, Sara Kramer, Sarah Raymond, University of Maryland School of Dentistry Dorie, Sara and Sarah will be doing their project at Baltimore Education and Awareness for Mothers and Children (B.E.A.M.), a program to empower the women in Baltimore City to obtain and maintain a healthy oral environment.

Adam Iddriss, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Adam will be doing a sexual education program for eighth graders at Dunbar Middle School.
Stephen Juraschek and Miriam Stewart, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Stephen and Miriam will create a program that engages students in the health professions as outreach workers to the Latino community of East Baltimore.

Alexander Billioux, Curtis Bone, and Emily Johnson, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Alexander, Curtis and Emily worked with General Wolfe Elementary School in proposing a fundamental change for language differences; the paucity of educational opportunities, and the lack of readily accessible health resources required for health maintenance.
Zoe Blacksin, Robin Goldman, and Margaret Tsien, University of Maryland School of Medicine Zoe, Robin, and Margaret worked with the Mountain Manor Treatment Center in discussion with adolescent patients that have health concerns at the outpatient drug rehabilitation site.
Derek Blank and David Richman-Raphael, University of Maryland School of Dentistry Derek and David created a dental component for Project Jump Start to help meet the oral health needs of homeless individuals in Baltimore.
Qiana Cryer, University of Maryland School of Social Work Qiana worked with the Grandparents program at Steuart Hill Middle School.
Blake Dohrn, University of Maryland School of Social Work Blake developed a children’s program Catherine’s Hearth, a support center for homeless families.
Paulina Gorney, Lauren Minor, Omobonike Oloruntoba, and Hadas Skupsky, University of Maryland School of Medicine Paulina, Lauren, Omobonike, and Hadas worked together to expand the curriculum for nutritional education for late middle school and early high school students.
Catherine Harbour, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health Catherine worked with the Baltimore Resettlement Center (BRC) and International Rescue Committee (IRC) to help refugees learn skills for home hygiene.
Lisa Krain, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health Lisa developed resources for Baltimore-Area Adults with learning disabilities and/or ADHD.
Deepti Kulkarni, University of Maryland School of Law Deepti worked with The University of Maryland domestic violence hotline project.

Debraj Mukherjee, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health Debraj’s project, “Active Steps to a Healthier Life,” was in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Hospital ER and Adolescent clinic.
Ligia Paina, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health Ligia organized two workshops addressing the health care needs of refugees and immigrants with the Episcopal Refugee and Immigrant Center Alliance (ERICA).
Alice (Kathy) Pazmino, Brynne Reece, and Nuthyla Sinada, University of Maryland School of Dentistry Alice, Brynne, and Nuthyla targeted Early Head Start and Head Start programs to enhance the development of young children, and to promote healthy family functioning.
2006-2007
Dan Anderson, John Watts, and Patricia Keegan, University of Maryland, Baltimore Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Social Work Dan, John, and Patricia created “Project Jump Start”, a student run health clinic for homeless individuals in West Baltimore. The clinic provides basic health and social services.
Sally Altland, University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Social Work Sally provided a tutoring service/work shop to assist families to maintain a healthy and productive lifestyle.
Kathryn Brown, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health Kathryn participated in a community outreach project based at Healthcare for the Homeless working with persons living with HIV providing outreach services.
Edward Chu, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Edward worked with the Urban Health Institute’s volunteer counseling and testing program to strengthen the communication and capacity building.
Pammie Crawford, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health Pammie worked with at-risk youth in tutoring for classes, GED preparation and career advisement utilizing the counselors at Baltimore City College.
Neal deJong and Paul Ravi Waldron, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Neal and Paul created a writing and self-expression class for residents of the Christopher Place Academy.
Morgan Dooley and Jessica Opoku-Anane, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Morgan and Jessica worked with the Community Adolescent Sexuality Education (CASE) program in the Dunbar Middle School teaching sexual education to 8th graders.
Lauren Graham, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health Lauren worked with at-risk youth within the Department of Juvenile Justice System providing the correct knowledge to make healthy choices in hopes to prevent unprepared, unwanted pregnancies.
Tokunbo Macaulay, University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Law Tokunbo established a writer’s workshop for students in middle school.
Teresa Matejovsky, Sarah Goldberg, and Lesley Wojcik, University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine Teresa, Sarah, and Lesley provided basic health education classes for at-risk students at Mountain Manor to focus on general health, STD’s and pregnancy.
Erin McDonald, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health Erin worked with the community service and advocacy project entitled ‘Voices of Change’ based on the use of photo-voice – qualitative non traditional communication method focused on the social and health challenges of this population.
Charles Peoples, University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Law Charles worked with the Baltimore City Ex-offender Initiative to create regular legal and conduct re-entry seminars to ensure seamless transition back into society.
Eric Tan and Jordan Leyton-Mange, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Eric and Jordan worked with Juniors at the Dunbar High School preparing them for the upcoming college application cycle to include financial aid training.
Poornima Vanguri, University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine Poornima developed a curriculum for nutrition education for late middle school and early high school students.
2005-2006
Daniel Bowers, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Daniel is worked with Melissa and Romina on the continuation of the “Incentive Mentoring” project at Dunbar High School, a project that included weekly tutoring, volunteer service, and special trips for twenty high school juniors. In addition to tutoring, Daniel tracked the students’ progress and maintaining databases of their personal information and documentation of all sessions. He also organized supplementary contact with colleges, vocational programs and military services to promote career planning. Finally, there were several outdoor activities throughout the year that were focused on teamwork and lifelong physical fitness.
Anna Brown, University of Maryland School of Social Work Anna worked in the summer and after school program at Sandtown Winchester Community Center, assisting them in various capacities such as teaching, cleaning, monitoring, tutoring, and chaperoning field trips. The main focus of her project, however, was to work with a group of over sixty children between the ages of 5 and 13, and to expose them to the different types of dance. Each day built on the previous day in order to teach the children a series of stretches, movements, and dance steps. Her goal was to get them more physically fit by providing them with a safe, fun, and creative way of exercising.
Melissa Dattalo, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Melissa worked with Daniel and Romina on the partnership project entitled, “Incentive Mentoring” at Dunbar High School, and also tutored students on a weekly basis. However, her main focus was on recruiting volunteers to expand the tutoring base to ensure the lasting success of the program. Melissa also focused on providing guidance for career development and in particular, she assisted students in identifying their options for attaining and financing a college education. These activities included assembling a college search packet with admissions and financial aid information, performing scholarship searches, helping students prepare for the SATs, and helping students to build a strong college application.
Frank Diggs, Coppin State University Helen Fuld School of Nursing This project focused on urban adolescent males ages 14-19 providing reproductive health education to prevent unplanned pregnancy and STIs and HIV/AIDs.
Sarah Elby, University of Maryland School of Medicine Sarah’s project at Parent’s Place and Maryland Family Voices included health advocacy and leadership for family members and children with special health care needs.
Leah Goldfine, University of Maryland School of Social Work & University of Maryland School of Law Leah worked with case management at the International Rescue Committee to assist refugees in America in finding housing, educational opportunities, and other basic needs that refugees often struggle to find. She also assisted in transporting clients to appointments and help in connecting the clients to housing resources, public benefits, medical treatment, and other resources. The intended result was for the refugees to be as settled and comfortable in Baltimore as they can be.
Sidney Knight, University of Maryland School of Social Work Sidney’s project took place at Project HOPTE, a day center for the homeless mentally ill. He helped motivate and assist the mentally ill patients to become more physically active, as well as to promote socialization and proper nutrition. He started fitness days, which included scheduled times for exercise, nutritional videos, and occasional outdoor activities. Once or twice a month, he had have group presentations where a guest speaker came to present a health.
Sarah Lindstrom, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Sarah’s project continued on the project from Mark Stibish, a Schweitzer Fellow from the class of 2003-2004. She worked with students at St Frances Academy, a private high school in Greenmount, to produce and air a radio piece. The content of the radio piece was about the planning, responses, and aftermath of Katrina. The students conducted interviews with survivors, relief workers, and other students in preparation of the piece. Skills training in interviewing and radio editing were be given to the students.
Tracy Lo, University of Maryland School of Medicine For her project at the University of Maryland Hospital’s Pediatric AIDs clinic, Tracy worked on fundraising and planning events, as well as establishing necessary infrastructure for a mentoring program which connects volunteers with patients.
Maria Mainolfi, University of Maryland School of Medicine Maria worked at Joseph Ritchie Hospice to expose medical students to Hospice care.
Patricia McGaa, University of Maryland School of Social Work & University of Maryland School of Law Patricia worked to promote physical and emotional health environmentalism and community with girls through outdoor education. This program worked with girls on learning outdoor skills and will be conducted at the Maryland Girl Scouts (region 2).
Therese Menez, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Nursing Therese worked at HERO where she worked with HIV/AIDs clients to provide clients with education, referrals, and support. She will identify the needs of the HERO clientele and implement interventions after analyzing assessment data from assessments of the educational needs and wants of the HERO clientele.
Amy Petkovsek, University of Maryland School of Law Amy’s project built on volunteer activities of prior fellows at the Baltimore City Teen Court, providing topics of importance, including conflict resolution/mediation, as well as topics related to health issues that teens face. The project enabled youth to advocate for the health disparities in their schools and communities.
Melissa Pool, University of Maryland School of Social Work Melissa worked at Tamar’s Children, a non profit lockdown facility for pregnant women who have been convicted of nonviolent crimes with sentences of 14 months to 3 years.
Mona Shah, University of Maryland School of Law Mona worked at the Baltimore Health Care Access to improve access for mothers and children enrolled in the Medicaid Program.
Laura Silverstein, University of Maryland School of Medicine Laura worked at Health Care for the Homeless and focused on health issues for homeless women.
Romina Wahab, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Romina worked with Melissa and Daniel on the “Incentive Mentoring” program at Dunbar High School. She worked specifically with a small group (about 5 students) or one-on-one tutoring by JHMI student volunteers that focus on assisting students with their homework. During the summer, 3 hour session SAT preparation classes are offered. Academic progress was monitored by their performance on homework assignments, class tests, and ultimately their final class grade. Short paper surveys were conducted to see what post-secondary pathways students are interested in. Monthly or bi-monthly community service activities were also continued.
2004-2005
Melissa Baum, University of Maryland School of Law Health Education Resource Organization, Inc. (H.E.R.O.): Assisted with legal counseling at H.E.R.O. She worked with client intake, representation of clients, and conducted research on each client’s legal issues.
Charlotte Byrd, University of Maryland School of Social Work Charmayne Little Southeast Youth Academy: Created a project on sexual health and wellness in adolescent girls, building self-esteem using lessons integrated with a media project.
Rupa Chilukuri, University of Maryland School of Law My Sister’s Place: Conducted legal workshops on a whole range of issues (housing, employment, domestic violence, financial literacy, benefits, etc.) for women in transitional housing and shelters.
Constantine Demetracopoulos, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Baltimore City Health Department-Caroline Street: Developed free primary care health education, health promotion, HIV-testing using Ora Quik, and Medbank for prescriptions.
Elizabeth Dzeng, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health: Developed a self-sustaining free clinic to provide quality healthcare and medicine to residents of Baltimore City, specifically the Latino population, who lack health insurance.
Mary Garner, University of Maryland School of Law Eager Street Academy : Helped detained juvenile delinquents to achieve their fullest potential through the development of leadership skills, effective conflict resolution, and peace building skills; also worked to deepen their understanding of their role as advocates in the community.
Sarah Hemminger, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Paul Laurence Dunbar H.S.: Worked at Dunbar High School with cohorts of students providing mentoring and support for low-achieving students. There were twenty other volunteers who were recruited to the program.
Heidi Johnson, University of Maryland School of Social Work Essex Community (Centro de la Communidad): Worked with Hispanics to coach them in navigating the health and human service systems, including the area of mental health.
Gabrielle Kilgore, University of Maryland School of Social Work Charmayne Little Southeast Youth Academy: Created a project on sexual health and wellness in adolescent girls, building self-esteem through lessons integrated with a media project.
Melissa Kline, University of Maryland School of Social Work Isaiah Wellness Center/Apostolic Towers: Carried on the work of prior fellows working with the seniors and their volunteer service programs.
Aisling McGuckin, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing Pacquin High School for Pregnant Teens: Developed a breast-feeding program for teen mothers.
Rachel McLean , Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Women’s Detention Center (WDC): Worked with incarcerated women to enhance their self-sufficiency and literacy skills.
Jane Oh , University of Maryland School of Medicine The Adolescent Clinic at the University of Maryland School of Medicine: Conducted small group sessions with adolescents, which focused on health promotion and obesity.
Vickie Piontkowski,University of Maryland School of Social Work Maryland New Directions: Contacted community employers to negotiate a brief volunteer contract (10-15 hours) for job readiness clients specifically referred by Maryland New Directions staff. The employers then provided them with a personal reference letter.
Jonathan Samet, University of Maryland School of Medicine Adolescent & Young Adult Center at University of Maryland: Worked with Dr. Marcell to assess patients’ nutritional health through questionnaires and interviews; intervened with guardians and children to attempt to adjust lifestyle and eating habits.
Darlene Stauch,College of Notre Dame Geriatric Program Southeast Senior Housing Initiative: Worked on food safety and food-borne illness assessment and intervention in low-income, elderly community dwellings.
Demetris White, University of Maryland School of Law Baltimore City Teen Court : Mentored and provided educational activities for high school students who participate in Baltimore City Teen Court. The forum fostered communication between the youths about health issues present in their lives.

Melinda Fowl, University of Maryland School of Social Work IOSC- Jean Holloway: Provided outreach services to Baltimore's immigrants and refugees (in particular, the Liberian community) by providing referrals to health and social services.
Amy Hampton, University of Maryland School of Social Work St. Michael's Outreach Center: Worked at the center’s pantry to increase participants' basic knowledge of nutrition, food preparation, and ways to reduce food expenses.
