BALTIMORE SCHWEITZER FELLOWS PROGRAM
ABOUT US
Founded in 1999 through the initiative of Dr. Robert Lawrence and Lee Bone, RN, MPH, at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Baltimore Schweitzer Fellows Program is one of thirteen Schweitzer program sites across the U.S. and is currently hosted at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. It is a partnership program with the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University that provides graduate students in health and human service schools (including the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Social Work, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Law) with a unique leadership development and community service opportunity.
Since the program’s inception, Schweitzer Fellows in Baltimore—competitively chosen from health-focused graduate student applicants in a variety of fields—have worked tirelessly to address health disparities and the social determinants of health throughout the greater Baltimore area.

OUR IMPACT
Since 1999, more than 225 Schweitzer Fellows have provided over 45,000 hours of service to Baltimore’s most vulnerable communities. Partnering with area community-based organizations, these Fellows have addressed a wide variety of unmet health needs by creating and carrying out yearlong projects with direct service at their core. Examples include the following initiatives:
• Developing an after-school program incorporating a range of activities including one-on-one tutoring, gardening, sports and fitness instruction.
• Working to provide birth companion support to pregnant youth in the juvenile justice system in Baltimore City.
• Partnering with Civic Environmental Leadership Program to heighten environmental awareness amongst at-risk youth in Baltimore.

When Fellows’ initial year of service ends, they carry their commitment to meeting the health needs of underserved people forward as members of the Schweitzer Fellows for Life alumni network, now more than 2,000 strong.
