Testimonials to Mark L. Wolf

Mark L. WolfMark L Wolf at The Albert Schweitzer Hospital, Lambaréné, Gabon

In January of 1985, the 110th anniversary of Dr. Schweitzer’s birth, Mark L. Wolf published an op-ed article in the Boston Globetitled Remembering Schweitzer [see below for full reprint], underscoring Dr. Schweitzer’s insistence that “my life is my argument” and his warning that those who set out to do good must not expect their path to be easy, but rather to encounter, as Schweitzer did, serious “boulders” along the way.

In April 2006, Mark stepped down as Chair of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship after over 15 years of service as President and Chairman. On this page are a few of the more than 100 testimonials received by Schweitzer Fellows about Mark’s own life, his own argument:

“Your vision and leadership in establishing the Schweitzer Fellows Program has changed countless lives. My experience as a Lambaréné Fellow in 1984 has shaped my professional and personal experience for over 20 years. We cannot thank you enough for the inspirational work and commitment which you have continued over so many years!

I will always be grateful to you for providing this opportunity to me and to so many others. We are better people because of your efforts, and I hope that we in turn have helped others to be motivated to live life according to these principles.”

- Robin K. Avery, M.D., 1984 Lambaréné Schweitzer Fellow

“Thank you for your many years of leadership and inspiration. Many organizations like The Hepatitis B Initiative began through the Schweitzer program and endure today, in multiple states, continuing to improve the health and well-being of hard-to-reach communities. There are no words to fully express how grateful we are for nurturing a student''''s desire to make a difference and then seeing it blossom into careers and ways of living. I would like to especially thank you for giving me the opportunity to channel the loss of my brother and mother from hepatitis B towards something positive.”

- Leslie Hsu, 1997-1998 Boston Schweitzer Fellow
