I am Albert Schweitzer

"The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship has changed my life in so many ways.  But I'm just one person.  There are thousands of people involved in the Fellowship.  Students, teachers, contributors, and many others who dedicate their time to the Fellowship every day.  And their efforts help thousands of others who are in desperate need of better health care.  So, you see, the important thing isn't how the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship has changed my life.  It's how it's changed all of our lives."

"When I was diagnosed with cancer at age 16, music became my most important treatment.  When I got older, I wanted to share this therapy with others.  The Albert Schwetizer Fellowship and its commitment to public service helped me fulfill this wish.  It made it possible for me to preform for cancer patients so music culd influence their healing.  I always knew music had the power to touch lives.  Thanks to the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, it also has the power to change them."

"As a child, I visited my grandparents all over the world.  On many of these trips, I saw so much poverty and sickness because people simply couldn't get the help they needed.  Seeing these inequalities firsthand is so much of why I later joined the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, giving me the chance to work with homeless people who didn't have healthcare.  And that experience inspired me to write a book on behalf of the millions of uninsured Americans.  I guess my path in life is to help those in need.  And based on all the other fellows out there, it's nice to know I'm not the only one."

"When I was a Fellow at the Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, Africa, I quickly learned that being a doctor there was more than just practicing medicine. To provide the best care, I really had to understand each patient’s way of life. Today, thanks to that experience, I know the importance of making an emotional connection in my work with homeless patients. The Fellowship taught me that compassion makes a real difference. And that’s a lesson I’ll have for life."

"A lot of people I meet don’t understand why I chose a life of service. They don’t understand why anyone would devote her career, maybe even her entire life, to that kind of work. That’s why I’m so grateful for The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship. It’s more than just an organization. It’s a group of people who share my passion for helping others. For me, being a Fellow isn’t a career move or a sacrifice. It’s simply who I am."
