A Life of Her Own
A Biography By: Patti Marxsen
Drawing from the correspondence between Helene and Dr. Schweitzer, as well as, Helene’s journals and professional writings, author Patti Marxsen reveals Helene to be a modern woman of courage.
The book describes Helene’s influence on Dr. Schweitzer and her support for him to become the doctor and humanitarian we know today. It provides a counter narrative to the traditional portrayal of a woman whose only contribution to history was her sacrifice for her husband and his genius. Readers learn the unique and impactful mark Helene made as a humanitarian in her own right.
The book also recounts how Helene’s tour of the United States in 1938-39 inspired a group of friends to establish The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship.
